Breaking the Rules

"Black is a favorite color choice because of its slimming effects"

Somehow I lived a long time believing I needed to wear black.  I haven't always been "fat", but according to the world's standards I've always been plus sized.
At 5'11" and with a genetics playing a strong role, I am not a small woman  by any means and honestly I've never been small.  I remember in early high school when I was one of the tallest if not the tallest girl in my class.  Clothes that fit right were really hard to come by.  I wore men's jeans because women's weren't long enough.  And, after spending middle school being made fun of because I wasn't a size 0; I really wanted to just blend into the background and not be noticed.

I must have been successful because years later a previous classmate was doing her practicum at the school my mom worked at as the school psychologist and the classmate remembered me as "the quiet girl."  I wasn't quiet, well with my friends anyway.  But I sure made blending into the background an art form.                                                                                                                                         It's taken me years to realize that I don't have to blend into the background.  I've always been drawn to color, however it wasn't until I started making my own clothes and testing patterns that I really started stepping out of my dark fabrics box.  I've discovered that I am much happier when I wear color.  My favorite color is rainbow.  If you add a little bit of glitter to the rainbow, I believe it's perfect.

I'm here to tell you that as a curvy woman/man you DO NOT have to live in that dark box.
Let your colors SHINE!  Hide no more and show us your beauty.

This month, I'm in charge of Breaking the Rules!  And, we're going to use COLOR!

I'm so excited to see everyone's color!
I've been collecting fabric for this month since we first started discussing what we wanted to do for the Break the Rules months.

For my first project I made one of my favorite outfits.

I used Patterns for Pirates Peg Legs and Basic Tee Patterns.

I have to say, it is REALLY hard to get the colors of the scales right when editing photos!  Being a tad see through myself, I tend to be really washed out in photos if it's not sunny.  But if I adjust the exposure at all it messes with the color of the scales.  So, I apologize now if they look a tad different in each picture.  I promise I didn't mess with the color of the fabric, just my skin tone.  I didn't want to scare everyone.

I love leggings.  Typically I pair them with tunic length tops or a dress, but my teenager informed me that if I was trying to show off the color of my leggings I couldn't have a longer top.  So, I have a shirt length top on.  Which of course puts me in a whole new level of uncomfortable...form fitting clothes on both top and bottom.  I digress though, that's a topic for another day.

For my pegs I decided to do a contour waistband.  Why have I never made a contour waistband before?  Seriously!  SO much better than a regular waistband.  I like my waistbands to sit higher up and this waistband is AMAZING!

Because spring is finally here I opted to make a capri pair of leggings.  It'll be a billion degrees up here in the Pacific NW before we know it and I want to wear these all summer long.

I even have mermaid scale earrings from Pearls and Prim, you can also find them on Etsy.  I don't get anything from them, I just really, really like their earrings!

Forgive my lack of moving much in my poses.  I just got my boot off last Friday from breaking my leg at the end of November.  Technically I should have my brace on, but I walked out to where we took these pictures, took it off and my husband is standing not too far out of the pictures holding it for me.

You can't take fun pictures of color with a black ankle brace on!

And these last pictures are for my teen daughter because she thought it was really funny that I just bought headphones that are pink and that she tied pink fabric onto them.

Fabric is from:
Mermaid scales is Athletic Brushed Poly from Zenith and Quasar
Double Brushed Poly top fabric is from Knitpop

So, let me see your color!!
