So Classic Sundress | Patterns for Pirates

I don't wear sundresses for many people, but the P4P team is apparently on the list of those that I'll put one on for.
I'm fairly certain the last time I had a sundress on I was a freshman in high school and I was in Hawaii.  This time though, I'm most definitely not in Hawaii and I'm a *few* years past being a freshman.

At first I didn't sign up to make the So Classic Sundress.  I struggle with a few parts of my body, and my arms are a couple of my least favorite.
I have learned through pattern testing and modeling my clothing that if clothing fits correctly, parts of my body I originally thought were "odd" aren't so odd any more.

The So Classic Sundress has helped me feel that way!
I honestly feel beautiful.  After making a muslin (I HIGHLY suggest making a muslin no matter what you are making), I was able to make a few adjustments to make the bodice fit me perfectly.  Originally I was adding length to the bodice because I have a 13" side waist and the pattern is drafted for 8".  However, I was making the empire option and I found that by adding the length in, I was making the bodice not fit as nicely as it should have because of the process of adding in length.  So, instead I used the natural waist from the original pattern and just cut out my pattern because after measuring I knew it was going to be the exact length I needed for the empire length.  It turned out to be the perfect length!  So make your muslin!

After making my muslin and working through any adjustments I needed make, I was able to add 2.5" to the skirt portion to make it hit me at knee length.
I love how the tutorial walks you through how to add in the elastic to the back to help get the exact fit.  Wovens can be difficult to fit if you've never worked with them before, and the P4P team has done an excellent job of helping you know how to make the dress fit your body.

I LOVE the look of the buttons!  However, my fabric wasn't having any button holes.  So, I didn't make my buttons functional.  I just sewed them on for affect and away I went.

I had this cute fabric which happens to be a double gauze fabric from Hobby Lobby.
I love it, and it's super light in this hot weather we're having.  However, it can tend to fall apart at the seams if you aren't careful.  In fact, when I was putting my dress on to take pictures I put my thumb through one of the seams in the back casings that hold the elastic.  After fixing that seam and ironing on interfacing to the rest of the seams in my bodice I'm confident it'll be fine and even wore it to church last Sunday without problems.  If you choose to use double gauze, make sure you use interfacing....I may have forgotten as I was sewing...OOPS!

And, don't forget to pair your So Classic Sundress with the Cocoon Cardigan!  They go amazingly well together!

  1. Thanks for sharing this! Were basically body-twins and I think this looks great on you! I went ahead and got both patterns for me and my girls and can't wait to try them out.
