My kids seem to go through pants, shorts, capri's etc. like they're made out of paper.

They either hit a growth spurt and all of the sudden are waiting for flood or they come home from an activity or playing outside with holes in the knees.

It doesn't matter how often I buy them pants,  it always happens!

So, one of my goals this year is to make the kids pants.  If I can make them to fit their skinny frames perhaps I can keep up with their growth spurts/crawling around/sports accidents.

You can stop laughing.  Logically I know that won't happen, but if I can realistically make  a pair or two when they need them I'll consider it a win.

Enter Pickle Toes Patterns Grasshopper pants.
Well, really I made knee length shorts because summer is coming!
It'll be 90 degrees here this weekend.

Pickle Toe Patterns uses pages  you need to trim.  This matters to some people, I don't particularly care.  Truthfully,  most of the time I don't trim them unless I'm testing a pattern. I hold the pattern up to the light or the window to make sure the pattern is going together correctly and assemble away.

There are several lengths to choose from; play shorts, bermuda, capri and pant.  For this pair I chose the bermuda length.  For Miss. Thang, getting her to wear anything shorter than capri's is a feat in and of itself so I pushed her out of her "box" by making the bermuda shorts.  Some days I really wish kids didn't have such strong opinions, it would be so much easier on my sewing.

Besides lengths, you can also choose to add pockets, side vents, and a cute little bow...if you put it on correctly.  I didn't put the bow on correctly, it keeps twisting to be vertical  instead of horizontal.  Also, just a recommendation:  don't serge the bow.  Serging it makes it really hard to turn and overall just makes it feel small.  I HIGHLY recommend you use your sewing machine to make the bows.

The tutorial has you top stitch the entire thing.  I appreciate top stitching on a pair of pants. The top stitching in my opinion gives them a store bought  look and not a home made look.  If I'm going to go to all the work of making my kids clothes, I don't want  them to look homemade.  I really want the store bought or the boutique look  to  them.

The casing for the waist band is finished very nicely and is the perfect size for the elastic to fit in.

Sewing the Grasshoppers is  really quick!

Overall we give the  Grasshoppers Four thumbs up!  She can run and play and yet they look nice.
